Often overlooked by visitors focused on the alpine aspect of the resort, Okemo Valley Nordic Center is a tranquil expanse of manicured trails that extend across snow-covered meadows and through rolling woodlands along the valley floor. A hidden world of beauty and adventure invites outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to discover the joys of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Nordic skiers can glide along at a leisurely pace on machine-made tracks set in the snow. For a faster-paced, cardio workout, they can try skate-skiing along corduroy-covered lanes of packed snow between the set tracks. The powerful, diagonal action of skate skiing is similar to ice skating. Okemo Valley Nordic Center’s well-marked network features 22 km of cross-country trails and 13 km of trails dedicated to snowshoeing. The terrain is ideally suited to a variety of ability levels and trails are groomed daily using state-of-the-art grooming machines. Learning to Nordic ski isn’t very difficult and snowshoeing is as easy as putting one foot in front of the other. Okemo Valley Nordic Center instructors are eager to help make those first few strides and steps successful ones. Private and group lessons are available. Inside the Nordic Center building, fashioned after a traditional Vermont barn, a fully stocked shop features fashionable and functional outdoor clothing and accessories. Demos, equipment rentals, repairs and ski waxing are available onsite. Snacks and beverages are sold also. Whether they’re in search of a heart-pounding workout or a relaxing alternative to the lift-serviced slopes, visitors will find Okemo Valley Nordic Center a pleasant way to experience the winter landscape of Vermont. okemo.com > 802-228-1600 > page 39
