Okemo Valley Golf Club Championship

  • July 8 & 9, 2017

    On July 8 and 9, Okemo Valley Golf Club hosted its annual Club Championship weekend. The format was 36 holes stroke play. Chris Garvey and Mark Gauthier made stellar comebacks in day two, surpassing frontrunner Roger Danyew on the final hole – setting up a playoff between Garvey and Gauthier. In dramatic fashion, Garvey birdied the second playoff hole. The Men’s Senior Champion title went to Tom Whalley. He held off a surging Pat O’Malley. Ruthie Schamback successfully defended her title as Ladies’ Club Champion, and newcomer Laura Bellatoni won low net in the Ladies’ Division. Jude Falango held off all comers in the Ladies’ Senior Division, garnering her first Championship.

    The Okemo Valley Golf Club Men’s League gathered for their first week of competition on May 9. The cloudy and chilly conditions did not dampen the spirits of the players kicking off the 2017 season of league play. Grabbing top honors in the team-of-four scramble for the night was Huntley’s Wealth Management. Clemente Delarosa, Jason Koponen, John Boehrer and Mark Huntley shot a 6-under-par 29. Second place went to Bensons Chevrolet. Scott Howard, Derek Karner, Trevor Benson and John Goffinet shot a 4-under-par 31. Finishing in third place was Built Rite MFG. Dave Higley, John Smith, Ken Guy and Jake Pierce shot a 4-under-par 31. Closest to the pin winners were Derek Karner on the 4th hole, and Rich Russo on the 8th hole.

    Sunny skies and warmer temperatures greeted the gents for week two of Men’s League at Okemo Valley Golf Club, May 16. The format shifted to match play, which the league will play primarily for the remainder of the season. Providing the first thumping of the season was Skygate Financial. The foursome of Kevin Theissen, Dean Alexander, Charlie Howard and Bob Herbst combined to win 23 out of a possible 36 holes. Finishing second was UBS. Chris Garvey, Ed Whitman, Craig Peters and Tom Harris combined to win 20 holes. Finishing third was Honey Dew Man. Peter Girouard, Eric Stocker, Larry Plumb and Tim Faulkner combined to win 18 ½ holes. Closest to the pin winners were Charlie Howard on the 4th, and Trevor Benson on the 8th hole.

Winning the night and moving up the yearlong leaderboard was Diamond Realty, as Roger Danyew, PJ Garvey, Bob Ahlers & Chuck Sweetman grabbed a combined 23.5 holes outs of a possible 36 against Bensons Chevrolet. The Honey Dew Man squad walloped UBS, as Peter Girouard, Eric Stocker, Larry Plumb & Tim Faulkner garner 22.5 holes. Green Mountain Appraisals finished third for the night as Ed Richter, Bob Higgins, Doug Lemire & Rich Russo won 21.5 holes. Closest to the pin winners were Dave Higley on the 14th, and Bob Cook on the 17th.

    Golfers participating in the Okemo Valley Golf Club Men's League returned to action June 13, after a two-week sabbatical provided by Mother Nature. Showing no signs of rust from all of the rain, Huntley Wealth Management thumped Knight Tubs as Clemente Delarosa, Dean Alexander, Ryan McGuire and Mark Huntley combined to win 21 holes. Finishing second for the night, but now on top of the season-long leaderboard, is Honey Dew Man. Peter Girouard, Eric Stocker, Larry Plumb and Tim Faulkner combined to win 20 holes. Benson's Chevrolet grabbed the 3rd spot. Tyler Coulter, Derek Karner, Trevor Benson and John Goffinet combined to win 19.5 holes. Closest to the pin winners were Peter Modisette and Chris Garvey.

While extending their lead in the season standings, they won 22 out of a possible 36 holes. Diamond Reality claimed 2nd for the night and moved into 2nd place in the season standings, with Roger Danyew, PJ Garvey, Herb Eddy and Chuck Sweetman winning 21 holes. Third place was won by Green Mountain Appraisals with Ed Richter, Bob Higgins, Doug Lemire and Rich Russo winning 19.5 holes. Closest to the Pin winners were Rich Russo and Dave Higley.

Tyler Coulter, John Smith, Ken Guy and Peter Modisette combined to win 19.5 holes. Finishing in third for the night was Stryhas Builders. Ted Stryhas, Terry Thayne, Bob Cook and Jack Menzie combined to win 19 holes. Closest to the pin winners were Tim Faulkner and Bob Herbst.

Finishing second for the night, and remaining in the thick of the race was Huntley’s Wealth Management. Clemente DeLarosa, Jason Koponen, Stew Schmidt and Mark Huntley combined to win 20 holes. Finishing third, and moving up four spots on the leaderboard, was Stryhas Builders. Ted Stryhas, Terry Thayne, Pat Moore and Jack Menzie combined to win 18.5 holes. Roger Danyew, PJ Garvey, Paul Laporte and Chuck Sweetman combined to shoot a five-under-par 30, and extending their season-long lead to nine points. Finishing second for the night, and remaining in second place in the season-long standings was Honey Dew Man. Peter Girouard, Eric Stocker, Larry Plumb and Jake Pierce fired a 31. Huntley’s Wealth Management rounded out the top three. Clemente Delarosa, Jason Koponen, John Boehrer and Mark Huntley shot a 31. Closest to pin winners were Ed Whitman and Jack Koponen.

    The 2017 Okemo Valley Golf Club Ladies’ League commenced on May 31 under cloudy skies with intermittent raindrops. The six-team field battled it out in the season opener with a scramble format.

    The team of Northern Naturals and Gardens emerged victorious with a team score of 37. The foursome led by Sue Horsman included teammates Jane Harrington, Shirley MacDonald and Pam McLaughlin. Second-place honors went to RVCCC with a score of 38. Finishing just one shot back, the RVCCC team led by Darlene Remy included teammates Mary Lou Shaw, Kathy McMahon and Pam Bruno. Closest to the Pin winner was Andrea Whitman on Hole #8. Pam Plumb won the Putt/Chip/Sand Challenge.

    On June 7, Okemo Valley Golf Club Ladies’ League played week 2 under beautiful blue skies with temperatures in the upper 60s. The six-team field played a “Toss it Out” format. It was a two-team race to the finish with Stryhas Builders prevailing with a 109 total, just two better than the 111 total of Willie Dunn’s. The winning team was led by Peg Margiotta’s evening best total of 21 net strokes. Also, playing outstanding golf for the evening were teammates Donna Tedford, Madeleine Fay and Sandy Diamond. The second-place Willie Dunn’s team had excellent play across the board from Rosemary Burns, Laura Bellantoni, Alice Thayne and Julie Bowyer. This week’s Closest To The Pin winner was Amy Taylor on Hole #8, and Putt/Chip/ Sand Challenge winner was Mary Lou Shaw.

    The Okemo Valley Golf Club Ladies’ League played week 3 on June 14 under beautiful blue skies with temperatures in the upper 60s. The six-team field played a countdown format. It ended up being a two-team race with Stryhas Builders prevailing with a 51 total – five better than the 56 total of Knight Tubs. The team captained by Peg Margiotta, Donna Tedford, Lois McArdle and Sandy Diamond led the way to victory. Jude Falango, Lorraine Hughes, Karen Reynolds and Pam Plumb comprised the second-place Knight Tubs squad. Laura Bellantoni took Closest to the Pin honors on Hole #8. Jill Tofferi proved to be the best putter of the evening with a 15 point total in the weekly Putt Off.

    The 2017 Okemo Valley Ladies League played week 4 under perfect golfing conditions and temperatures in the upper 70’s. The 6 team field played the Alternate shot format. It ended up being the closest team/league competition to date. RVCCC totaled an even par score of 70 that left them in a tie with Willie Dunn’s. By virtue of the hole 1 tiebreaker Willie Dunn’s was awarded 1st place for the evening’s event. RVCCC captured the 2nd place prize. Willie Dunn’s had outstanding play from captain Rosemary Burns and team members Alice Thayne, Laura Bellantoni, and Julie Bowyer. RVCCC led by Darlene Remy, and team members Pam Bruno, Mary Lou Shaw, and Kathy McMahon had exceptional team play as well narrowly missing out on the evening’s top honors.

    The Okemo Valley Golf Club Ladies’ League played week 5 on June 28 with temperatures in the upper 60s. The six-team field played a quota format. In the end, the competition finished in a tie at +5 for the teams of Stryhas Builders and Ludlow Insurance. The top performer of the night was Stryhas Builders’ Lois McArdle with an outstanding individual score of +7, including a birdie on hole # 6. McArdle’s teammates included Peg Margiotta, Donna Tedford, and Sandy Diamond. Tied with the Stryhas Builders for top honors, the Ludlow Insurance foursome was captained by Lee Ann Haskell with teammates Kathy Grant, Suzanne Garvey and Andrea Whitman. Both teams received 14 points for their play. Lee Ann Haskell won closest to the p on hole #8. Lorraine Hughes won the week’s putt/chip/ sand challenge.
