OKEMO HOSTS VERMONT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA JUNE 27

LUDLOW, Vt. – Okemo Mountain Resort’s Jackson Gore Inn will welcome the 2014 Summer Festival Tour of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra on Friday, June 27. Sponsored by Mary W. Davis Realtor & Associates, Inc., this is the VSO’s fourth appearance at Okemo. The concert is slated to take place in the courtyard of the Jackson Gore Inn. The grounds will open at 5:30 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. concert. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Okemo’s Coleman Brook Tavern or online at okemo.com. Adult tickets are priced at $31 in advance or $36 at the door. Tickets for children under 18 are free in advance (with the purchase of adult tickets) or $12 at the door.

The theme for this year’s Summer Festival Tour is "Let's Dance" with Conductor Anthony Princiotti. The performance features music from the world of dance - from waltzes to swing and polkas to salsa. Toe-tapping melodies by Strauss, Delibes, Borodin, and Gershwin will put attendees "in the mood" for dance hits from Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. The 1812 Overture, marches, and fireworks conclude the show.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets for seating. Dining options will include fresh-from-the-grill burgers, hot dogs and other barbecue favorites. Beer and wine will also be available. Jackson Gore’s Coleman Brook Tavern features full-service dining with an al fresco seating option. In case of rain, the concert will move indoors to Okemo’s Ice House.
The Vermont Symphony Orchestra started in 1934 when a small group of musical enthusiasts meeting in Woodstock convinced each other that by working together, they could assemble the necessary musical and financial resources from across rural Vermont to create a statewide symphony orchestra. At their center was an inspiring young conductor named Alan Carter, fresh from musical studies in Cologne and Paris, who became the first music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.

While the Orchestra has grown over the years, its basic philosophy and much about its operation have remained the same. The steps taken by a farsighted Vermont legislature of 1939 (to provide $1,000 for a performance at the New York World's Fair), have been followed by subsequent lawmakers, so that today the legislature continues to be a major source of funding. The VSO is the oldest state-supported orchestra in the country.
