ROSS POWERS IS OKEMO’S SNOWBOARD AMBASSADOR
LUDLOW, Vt. – It is with great pleasure and excitement that Okemo Mountain Resort Owners Tim and Diane Mueller welcome Olympian Ross Powers to the resort as Okemo’s Snowboard Ambassador. Powers will also be working with other Triple Peaks resorts, Mount Sunapee Resort, in N.H. and Crested Butte Mountain Resort, in Colo., to promote snowboarding and the outdoor winter sports lifestyle.
“There are not a lot of Gold and Bronze Olympic medalists out there and Ross is not only a great athlete, but also a great person who personally reflects many of the core values that Okemo and Triple Peaks embrace,” says Tim Mueller. “We feel that Okemo/Triple Peaks will help Ross to accomplish his goals of winning a third medal at the Vancouver Olympics and Ross will enhance Okemo's reputation as being a leader in snowboarding and skiing.”
Owner of more halfpipe titles than any other rider in history, including a gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and a 1998 Olympic bronze medal, Powers now has his sights set on making the U.S. snowboardcross team and competing in the 2010 Games. In addition to making numerous personal appearances at Okemo events throughout the season, Powers will be running snowboard camps to benefit the Ross Powers Foundation, a non-profit foundation for athletes with financial need. Mount Sunapee Resort and Crested Butte Mountain Resort will also be hosting Ross Powers Snowboard Camps.
“Okemo is an awesome family resort with great terrain parks,” said Powers. “There’s a commitment to building and maintaining parks and pipes and Okemo traditionally is the first in the East to open its superpipe. It’s a place where I can train and it’s a comfortable mountain where I can raise my family.” Ross and his wife, Marisa have a four-year-old daughter, Victoria, and recently celebrated the arrival of their second daughter, Meredith.
Powers was born and raised in Londonderry, Vt. Considered snowboarding’s first child prodigy, he competed in his first U.S. Open competition at the age of 9 with his fourth grade class in attendance. He competed in nationals the next year and was a world champion before his 18th birthday. In 1998, he represented the U.S. in Nagano taking home the first Olympic halfpipe medal for the U.S. Powers dominates the snowboard world having won almost every title in snowboarding, including Olympic gold in 2002.
“I like that I’ll be involved with three resorts that are such good family resorts,” says Powers. “I respect what the Muellers are doing and look forward to working with them.”
