Okemo Competition Programs - FreestyleFRESH START FREESTYLERS TEAM
*Age* 8-12

*Goal* To introduce younger skiers to meeting and learning in a weekly, non-competitive team format with friends; to learn the correct body position, turning, edging, absorbing and extending and safe jumping skills necessary to be a successful freestyle competitor; to be confident and prepared enough to, by February, compete in their first mogul competition at Okemo; and to have fun while being part of the team.

*Competition* While Fresh Start is a non-competitive program, a successful season will culminate in the athlete entering their first-ever mogul competition in the comfort of the “home court,” the Okemo B Mogul Competition on Presidents’ Weekend.

*Travel* There is no travel involved with this program.

*Prerequisites* Skiers should have the motivation to get out on the mountain each day, want to have fun, want to learn how to ski a variety of terrain, mainly moguls, with good form and want to jump. A solid all-mountain skiing base, parallel turns and a good attitude!

 *Price* First Child: $800; 2nd child: $775.

B MOGUL TEAM
 *Age* 9-16

*Goal* To give skiers proficiency at maintaining a line in the moguls, holding a good form, successfully completing two jumps in a mogul course and having fun while being part of the team.

*Competition* Skiers compete in USSA Eastern Qualifier Series B level mogul competitions throughout Vermont: Okemo, Killington, Sugarbush. Mt. Snow, etc. (Must hold USSA competitor's license).  Skiers are encouraged to compete in at least 3 comps for the season and to train at Okemo no fewer than 2 weekends per month.

*Travel* Day trips to other mountains for competitions – coordinated by the Program Director.  Parents who are free are encouraged to volunteer for driving and to come along and spectate.

*Prerequisites* No prior competition experience necessary.  Regarding skiing ability, either a year in the Fresh Start Freestylers Program or a coach screening at the beginning of the season is required.  At this level, skiers should be able to be self-motivated to get out on the mountain every day, want to have fun, want to learn how to ski moguls with good form and want to jump. Also, powder days are spent in the trees and we like to encourage all-mountain skiing for all skiers, with an overarching emphasis on mogul skiing.

 *Price* First Child: $1100; 2nd child: $1050.

A MOGUL TEAM
*Age* 14+, though mainly dependent upon ability/experience.

*Goal* To enter into a more serious level of training and competition in mogul skiing; to refine and perfect the mogul turning, edging, absorbing, extending, body positioning and jumping skills introduced at the B mogul level; to learn and compete with more technical air maneuvers; to accumulate points on the USSA Eastern and National points lists, ultimately qualifying for Invitational Championship events; and to have fun while being part of the team.

*Competition* Skiers compete in USSA Eastern Championship Series A level mogul and dual mogul competitions throughout New England, ultimately aimed at qualification for Eastern Championships and Junior Olympics  (must hold USSA competitor's license).

*Travel* Plan on traveling to 8 competitions, all over New England, throughout the season.  Often leaving on a Thursday night and returning on a Sunday.  Travel logistics/supervision handled and coordinated by Head Mogul Coach/Program Director.

*Prerequisites* Generally speaking, one is ready for the ‘A’ circuit after a solid top-ten performance at ‘B’ mogul Eastern Championships.  Enrollment at Okemo Mountain School, for at least a 6 week Target Term, is highly recommended.  Athletes should be prepared and excited for a more serious level of training and competing than at the ‘B’ level.

 *Price* First Child: $1100; 2nd child: $1050.

B FREERIDE TEAM
 *Age* 9-16

*Goal* To expand an already solid skill set of skiing and jumping to include safety and competency on all terrain park features, such as jumps, boxes, rails, and halfpipe; focus on takeoff and landing technique; to learn a variety of switch and forward spins; to compete in at least three USSA B level Slopestyle or Big Air events around Southern VT; and to have fun while being part of the team.

*Competition* Skiers compete in USSA Eastern Qualifier Series B level Slopestyle and Big Air competitions throughout Vermont: Okemo, Killington, Sugarbush. Mt.

Skiers should be comfortable straight-airing terrain park jumps up to 30 ft., be able to spin a 360, and be comfortable getting to the lip of the halfpipe.  Sound too advanced?  Try our Fresh Start Freestylers Program!  At this level, skiers should have the motivation to get out on the mountain every day and a desire to have fun on all sorts of terrain.

  *Price* First Child: $1100; 2nd child: $1050.

A FREERIDE TEAM
 *Age* 9-16

*Goal* To safely learn and compete at the highest level of Freeride (park and pipe) skiing; to perfect and polish forward, switch, off-axis, and inverted maneuvers; to compete in USSA as well as Pro and Open competitions; to compile an edited film segment by the season’s end; to move forward with a unique, individual, and personal skiing progression; and to have fun while being part of the team.

*Competition* Skiers compete in USSA Eastern Championship Series A level Slopestyle and Halfpipe competitions throughout New England (Must hold USSA competitor's license); depending on ability, skiers travel to CO for the US Freeskiing Open and the Aspen Freeskiing Open, as well as various East Coast Pro level events.

*Travel* Plan on traveling to 8 competitions, all over New England, throughout the season.  Often leaving on a Thursday and returning on a Sunday.  Travel logistics/supervision handled and coordinated by Head Freeride Coach/Program Director.

*Prerequisites* Either a year in the B FREERIDE Program or a coach screening at the beginning of the season.  Enrollment at Okemo Mountain School, for at least a 6 week Target Term, is highly recommended.  Skiers should have a knowledge of and passion for the sport, translating to a clear vision and goals for what they wish to achieve.

  *Price* First Child: $1100; 2nd child: $1050.

Meet the Coaches

Chris Marks – Program Director and Head Mogul Coach.  This is Chris’ 7th year coaching Freestyle at Okemo.  Chris has attended USSA level II Aerials certification clinics and has coached our athletes at Regional, Junior Olympic, and National Championship level competition, in addition to numerous Pro level Open Freeride comps.

Mike Bruno – Head Freeride Coach.  This is Mike’s 8th year coaching Freestyle at Okemo, in addition to having been one of Okemo Freestyle’s early team members back in the 90’s.  Mike spends the majority of his season coaching the team’s upper level Freeriders, traveling, competing, and filming all over the country.  Mike has coached our team at Junior Olympic and National Championship levels as well as stood in the start at the Finals of several Pro level Open comps.  He was around for the birth of – as well as done a great deal of filming for – companies such as 4BI9 and New Intelligent Group.

Rob Treat – B Freeride Coach.  This is RT’s 6th year coaching Okemo Freestyle.  RT began his skiing career racing at Okemo, then returned to us to coach after spending a few years in Colorado going to school and coaching Freestyle at Ski Club Vail.  RT is not afraid to bring up the energy level of the group by stepping to a jump and showing the athletes how it’s done.

Jon Norton – B Mogul Coach.  This is Jon’s 5th year coaching Okemo Freestyle.  Jon began his Freestyle career as an original member of Okemo’s A Mogul Team in the early 90’s.  Jon brings a wealth of competitive experience and success to the program, along with a fair share of intensity to get the team fired up.

Giovanna Urist – Fresh Start Freestyler’s Coach / B Mogul Coach.  This is Giovanna’s second year coaching Okemo Freestyle, returning to the program several years after graduating from OMS as an A Mogul skier, having competed in US Ski Team Selections, among other high level events.  Giovanna has all the knowledge and twice the enthusiasm for the sport – whether she’s holding a video camera or a shovel, she’s the one responsible for creating and growing our developmental program, the Fresh Start Freestylers.

Frank Provance – Mogul Coach, Founding Father of Okemo Freestyle.  Frank started the Okemo Freestyle program in the midst of a diverse ski-industry career as instructor, freestyle competitor, Hart Ski rep., and coach.  He continues to help grow the program, coach part time, and prove to the team that like a cheese, a mogul skier only gets better with age!

Len Ancuta – B Mogul Coach.  This is Lenny’s 2nd year coaching Okemo Freestyle.  He is currently a rugby player at Union, formerly a mogul competitor at KMS then a Freeride competitor and graduate of Okemo Mountain School.  Lenny has hiked and skied Big Mountain terrain all over the world and has filmed with 4BI9.

Bill Gozzi – B Mogul Coach.  Billy has coached Okemo Freestyle on and off for the past 15 years.  He is a former Bud Pro Mogul Tour competitor and continues to show people up as a competitive water skier.  He also has a full quiver of 200+ cm skis rear entry boots, for those days when you feel like skiing has just gotten too easy.
