GREAT GOLF RESORTS OF THE WORLD DIRECTORY
LISTS OKEMO MOUNTAIN RESORT
LUDLOW, Vt. – The newest edition of Great Golf Resorts of the World lists 40 of the greatest courses around the globe. Among them is Okemo Mountain Resort, located in the heart of south-central Vermont. Great Golf Resorts of the World Publisher Richard K. Summers writes, “A golf vacation at a luxury resort offers many things: fantastic golf, exquisite accommodations, excellent food and a long list of other inspiring amenities. But I think that the best luxury resorts should offer some things that are even more precious: time to relax and unwind, an important change of scenery and especially hours away with family or friends.”
Adjacent to the classic Vermont village of Ludlow, Okemo Mountain Resort is a four-season playground that built its reputation for quality and superior guest service as a winter playground for skiers and snowboarders. Okemo’s Jackson Gore is the newest development of the resort, and the Jackson Gore Inn serves as the ideal hub from which to launch family fun and adventure at any time of the year. Two 18-hole championship golf courses, Okemo Valley Golf Club and Tater Hill Golf Club, offer challenging play with spectacular scenery. Jackson Gore’s Spring House is a state-of-the-art fitness facility with swimming pools and splash features. Tennis and basketball courts round out the on-site recreational facilities for summertime at Jackson Gore, but the area’s offerings include hiking, biking, water sports, horseback riding, plus shopping, dining, area attractions and touring Vermont’s spectacular countryside.
“Okemo’s inclusion in Great Golf Resorts of the World places the resort in a class of the best of the world,” says OVGC Vice President and General Manager of Golf Jim Remy. “It is the quality of our facility that elevates the course to this highest level of recognition.”
Okemo Valley Golf Club is Vermont's first heathland-style golf course and was designed according to the traditions of the game by Vermont Golf architect Steve Durkee. The club features a graciously appointed full-service clubhouse, golf academy, indoor practice facility, and 18-acre state-of-the-art outdoor training center. The layout is a par 70 that measures 6,400 yards in length and features bent grass greens, tees and fairways with multiple tee areas for each hole, ensuring playability and challenge for all ability levels. Rolling hills, moderate elevation changes and wide fairways with well-placed hazards enhance the beautiful heathland layout. Among its list of awards and recognition, Okemo Valley Golf Club was named the Top Modern Club in Vermont by GolfWeek in 2007. In 2006, GolfWeek named Okemo Valley Golf Club the Best Public Course in Vermont. From 2003 through 2007, it has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Golf Courses in America for Women by Golf for Women. Okemo Valley Golf Club has hosted the Vermont PGA Championship, the United States Women’s Public Links Qualifier and various Vermont Professional Tournaments.
Located just a short drive from Okemo Valley Golf Club, Tater Hill Golf Club’s birch-lined fairways, stone walls, scenic mountain vistas and vibrant flower gardens welcome golfers to the newest member of the Okemo golf family. Tater Hill Golf Club, located in North Windham, Vt., features rolling hills and undulating fairways with moderate elevation changes that provide plenty of challenge for low handicaps, but remains playable for all ability levels. First built in 1961 on the preserve of a 500-acre working potato farm, the former 9-hole course was defined by its country charm and rustic New England character. In the early 1990s the course was expanded to an 18-hole layout, but blossomed into the gem that it is today under the ownership of Okemo Mountain Resort. The par 71, 18-hole course layout has recently undergone significant capital improvements. The white clapboard clubhouse, a former farmhouse, contains all of the services and conveniences found at a modern facility. It features comfortable furnishings, a large stone fireplace and a large terrace overlooking the course and surrounding hillsides.
